LISMORE
Lismore, with a population of 46,000, is the business centre of the Far North Coast of NSW. But it is far more than this. Lismore is located a short drive inland from the coastal towns of Ballina and Byron Bay and also from World Heritage National Parks, with features such as the 'Protestors Falls', saved from logging in the 1970s. It is in the middle of the area known as the "Big Scrub' rainforest and has a remnant of that rainforest - Rotary Park - near the city centre.
Whilst Lismore is the business and service capital of the region, it has a rich cultural life, with theatres, alfresco cafes, art galleries and a university. It is also a major sports centre, with excellent baseball, soccer and hockey facilities that attract state and national events.

It is a city with a diverse population, many of whom live in villages located in close proximity to it, such as Nimbin, The Channon and Clunes. Its population includes the Wiyabal clan of the Bundjalung people, who were the traditional owners, the early settler populations including a significant Italian community, those who came to Nimbin for the Aquarius festival in 1973 and stayed to make their homes here, and new generations of migrants from many different countries.
There is much more variety in Lismore than you might expect from a country town. It is the hub of a thriving macadamia nut industry, while other primary products include dairy products, beef cattle and tropical fruits. Indeed, there's something here for everyone. It is renowned for its rolling green hills and picturesque countryside, offering secluded retreats, natural wonders, country markets and historic country pubs. It's not only a great place to live - it's a great place to visit.
